Start here
Your first action
Do this now
Define the specific trip first: origin, destination, time, mobility needs, and whether a return trip is needed. Each route requires different confirmation.
Next: TARC fixed-route transit and reduced-fare options
Ask: Ask whether the route, stop, and schedule work for the specific trip. For reduced fare, ask about the current application process and eligibility criteria.
Situation: Cannot get to an appointment, do not have a ride or bus fare, or mobility and route needs make travel difficult.
What you need to startUse what you have. Missing items do not block the first call.
Have ready if available
- Origin address and destination address
- Appointment date and time
- Return trip requirement
- Mobility, wheelchair, or accessibility needs
Missing something? Ask what can be reviewed; do not wait to call.
If the first route fails
If fixed-route transit does not work for this trip or paratransit is needed: Dial 211 and ask about current medical transportation (NEMT for Medicaid-covered trips), paratransit, volunteer driver, and community transportation options. NEMT requires booking at least 72 hours ahead.
Keep the original route confirmation open in case the backup has a longer lead time.
Universal preparation guidance · checked 2026-08-01 · Jurisdiction-neutral
What remains uncertain: Route availability, NEMT eligibility, paratransit scheduling windows, and accessible vehicle availability must be confirmed with the specific program. Booking in advance is usually required.

How to read checked, listed, and unknown informationA listing can stay useful without being provider confirmed.
- Checked fact or route
- NOLO matched the fact to the named source on the date shown. This is not proof of current availability or provider confirmation.
- Directory lead
- A listing that may still help remains visible with an honest status such as Possibly active or Needs verification.
- PROVIDER CONFIRMED
- Only named fields backed by linked first-party provider evidence, integrity checks, and attributed human approval may carry this state. NOLO never infers it from a website, import, likely fit, or contact attempt.
- UNKNOWN / Needs verification
- NOLO does not know the answer yet. Confirm it directly; this is not a claim that the resource or option does not exist.
Each step in full
The same steps as the plan above, with the instructions for each one.
Do firstUse emergency help for an emergency
Do this
For immediate danger or a medical emergency, use emergency services rather than waiting for a routine ride.
- Non-emergency medical transportation is not an ambulance service.
- If urgency is unclear, contact the healthcare team for advice about the appropriate response.
Why this step is here
Emergency assessment precedes routine transport booking.
What was checked, and what is still unknown (1)
- Schedule NEMT through the regional broker with 72 hours' notice including weekends and holidays, except qualifying urgent care; eligibility and trip approval depend on the published conditions.Kentucky Transportation Cabinet — How to Schedule Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT). Read on 2026-09-07.
Still unknown
- This guide cannot assess symptoms or decide whether routine travel is safe.
Step 1Ask the Medicaid transport broker of 4
Do this
For a Medicaid-covered medical visit, contact your regional broker using KYTC's county directory.
- Ask the broker to check your eligibility and trip conditions. Routine booking needs 72 hours' notice, including weekends and holidays.
- If the visit is sooner, explain it and ask whether the urgent-care exception applies; do not assume it does.

Read on 2026-09-07.
Still unknown
- Medicaid enrollment alone does not approve this trip, vehicle, or urgent-care exception.
Step 2Confirm the trip you need of 4
Do this
Confirm the appointment, arrival time, destination, return trip, and mobility needs.
- Ask the destination whether the visit is confirmed and what happens if transport fails.
- Tell the ride service privately about mobility equipment, an attendant, or other access needs.
Move on when: you can give the booking service the actual trip details.

- Appointment status and the suitable vehicle or support must be confirmed directly.
Step 3Compare other ride options of 4
Do this
Ask the destination, local transit provider, or 211 about options for this trip.
- Confirm the fare, route, operating hours, return journey, and accessibility.
- For paratransit or a special ride program, ask about eligibility and advance booking before relying on it.
Why this step is here
General trips need their own route; medical transport cannot be assumed to cover them.

Step 4Resolve a failed or denied ride of 4
Do this
Contact the booking service and destination if the ride fails or is denied.
- For Kentucky NEMT, start with the regional broker; KYTC also publishes 888-941-7433 for unresolved concerns.
- Keep the denial notice and follow its appeal instructions. Ask the clinic about care continuity or rescheduling.
- Choose a safe contact method, name who owns the next action, and write down when to check again.
- Keep a safe copy or reference number for each notice, submission, referral, and instruction so the work can resume without starting over.
Move on when: the next trip or care fallback is confirmed, or has a responsible contact and next check.

If something is blocking you (3)What commonly stops people here, and what has worked around it.
If something is blocking you
The trip is too soon for the first transportation route.
Things to try
- Ask the destination about remote, rescheduled, nearer, or urgent alternatives and search community support.
Accessibility, companion, child, phone, or return-trip needs are unclear.
Things to try
- Confirm each requirement before accepting or traveling to the ride.
The normal route stalls, gives conflicting instructions, or cannot confirm the next step.
Things to try
- Record who said what, when, and through which channel.
- Ask what escalation or alternate channel exists, then keep a separate fallback route open.
Things that may help today
- If someone is stranded and in immediate danger, or a medical emergency is happening, use the Emergency help panel first — NOLO does not monitor or dispatch help.
- Ask the destination whether the service can be remote, moved, or rescheduled safely.
- Search community support and the underlying journey for another service location or route.

Practitioner and helper guidance
Preparation ideas for the person and anyone helping
Treat the return trip as a separate confirmation.
Arrival does not establish a safe way back.
Document mobility and communication needs in the person’s own terms.
Accessibility must be confirmed, not inferred from a generic service label.
Separate documents, client statements, agency instructions, and unconfirmed assumptions in the record.
Clear labels let the next helper reuse what is known without turning an inference into a fact.
End each handoff with a named owner, safe contact method, next check date, and fallback.
A referral is easier to resume when responsibility and the failed-route response are visible.

Appointment strategy
- 1.Ask whether an appointment is required before you travel.
- 2.Ask how walk-ins are handled and whether arriving early changes the process.
- 3.Confirm the location, hours, and documents again on the day you plan to go.
- 4.Ask what safe contact method will be used for changes, cancellations, or follow-up.
- 5.Before ending, ask who to contact and what to do if the appointment or referral cannot proceed.

Day of the appointment or visit
At the office
- 1.Arrive early when practical, especially if you are walking in.
- 2.Ask for a realistic wait estimate.
- 3.Ask whether the office uses text messages, callbacks, or another queue-notification system.
- 4.Ask whether you can leave briefly and return without losing your place.
- 5.Prepare for a potentially long day.
- 6.Write down the name or department that gave each instruction, the date, and the next action.
Bring for the wait
- A charger
- Water and snacks where permitted
- Medications you may need during the wait
- All paperwork together in one folder
- Something to do while you wait
- A safe way to take notes and store confirmation or reference numbers

Before you travelA final check of documents, opening hours, and the receiving contact.
Avoid a wasted trip
- 1.Recheck the location, hours, appointment rules, and current document instructions before leaving.
- 2.Keep originals and copies organized, and ask before handing over the only copy you have.
- 3.At the counter, explain what is missing and ask what replacement or workaround evidence can be reviewed.
- 4.Ask what was received, what is still missing, how status can be checked, and what happens if the normal route fails.
- 5.Keep a safe copy, receipt, confirmation, or reference number for anything you submit.
Ask before leaving the counter: “Is there anything else that could prevent this application from being approved today?”
