A few things can save you a call, a trip, or having to start over.
NOLO lists programs separately when one organization runs more than one, because each can have its own rules.
One organization may run several different programs. Each can have different eligibility rules, hours, documents, locations, and application steps.
Use the information for the specific program you are trying to reach — not the organization's main number or main address, unless that is what the program listing shows.
For example, an organization might run both a food pantry and a utility-assistance program. Qualifying for one does not mean the other works the same way.
These are worth settling first — by phone, on the program's own website, or at the door.
If anything is unclear, ask before you travel when you can. What you are told today is not a promise about tomorrow — but it is better than finding out at the door.
Going to an office? What to expect and what to ask →This is what programs sometimes ask for — not a list of what you need. Only bring what the specific program says it needs. If you do not have something they ask for, say what is missing and ask whether they can review another document or another way to show the same information.
See what NOLO knows about a specific program →Funding, beds, appointment slots, application windows, and staff capacity change faster than a program's address or phone number.
A program can still exist, and still be listed here, even when it cannot help everyone today.
If the first route cannot help, ask:
Then come back to NOLO for another route.
Being told no can mean several different things, and they lead to different next steps.
A no today is not always a no. Asking which one it is tells you what to do next.
If you need an interpreter, an accommodation, or another way to communicate, ask the provider directly when you can.
NOLO shows languages, locations, and ways to apply when it has that information on file. Where a listing says nothing about accessibility or interpreting, that means NOLO has not confirmed it — not that it is unavailable.
For details NOLO has checked, NOLO records the source and check date.
