Unemployment benefits were denied
Use the Notice of Determination to file a written appeal on time. Keep claiming eligible weeks while the decision is reviewed.
Identify the decision and date
Find your Notice of Determination and its mail date. Read the reason. This guide covers the first appeal; later decisions have their own instructions.

Prepare a written appeal
Explain which decision you dispute and why. Include your name, last four Social Security digits and contact information as the official guide directs.
Submit within the notice deadline
The first appeal is due within 30 days of the notice's mail date. Use an Appeals Branch route listed in the guide. Keep proof of submission.
Continue payment requests
Keep requesting eligible weeks while the appeal is pending. Follow work search and other claim rules. A successful appeal can only pay properly claimed eligible weeks.
Prepare for the hearing
Keep the receipt and hearing notice. Gather work records and witnesses related to the denial reason. Confirm the hearing method and attend at the stated time.
If this does not work
If you missed the deadline or cannot use a listed route, contact the Appeals Branch at once through the guide. Explain the problem and ask about next steps.
Confirm before you go
Confirm the decision type, deadline, filing route and hearing instructions. Keep private information within the official process. An appeal does not promise benefits.
The agency decides who can get help. Funds, appointments, and space may change. Keep private records with you; this page does not ask for them.
