Kentucky · What to do when…

Toddler may need help learning or talking

Make a referral to Kentucky’s early intervention program and ask about an evaluation for your child.

  1. Write down what worries you

Note your child’s age and examples of things that are hard, such as talking, moving or playing. Bring those notes to your child’s doctor and the referral team.

  2. Find your point of entry office

Open the CHFS page below. Use the Point of Entry Listing to find the regional office for your county. Ask to refer your child to the Kentucky Early Intervention System.

  3. Give the team a way to reach you

Share your child’s birth date, your concern and a safe contact method. Ask who will call next and when. Ask about an interpreter if you need one.

  4. Ask how the evaluation works

Ask what the team will check and what consent it needs. Ask about costs and insurance before you agree. If your child is nearly three, ask what the next program would be.

  5. Review the next plan together

Ask for the findings in plain words. If services are offered, ask which goals, visits and home activities fit your child. Keep a copy of the plan and the next appointment.

If this does not work

If you cannot reach the regional office, use the KEIS state office contact on the CHFS page. Ask for help finding the right referral team.

Confirm before you go

Confirm your child’s age, referral office, visit location, consent, costs and interpreter. A referral starts a review; it does not promise services.

The agency decides who can get help. Funds, appointments, and space may change. Keep private records with you; this page does not ask for them.
