An older adult needs help staying at home

Ask the aging agency serving your county for a Homecare review. Explain which daily tasks have become hard.

  1. List the help needed at home

Write down trouble with meals, bathing, dressing or chores. Note what family help is available and which needs are urgent.

  2. Find the aging agency for your county

Open the Area Agencies on Aging list below. Find your county under Counties Served. Contact that regional agency and ask about Homecare.

  3. Ask for an assessment

Tell staff the person's age, daily needs and living situation. Ask how they review Homecare eligibility and whether an in-home assessment is possible.

  4. Check services and waits

Ask which services can be offered in your area, any cost, and whether there is a waiting list. Ask about meals and caregiver breaks separately.

  5. Agree on the next contact

Keep the review date and staff contact. If needs change while waiting, tell the agency and ask whether the care plan needs another review.

If this does not work

Ask the regional aging agency for other local options if Homecare cannot meet the need. For immediate danger or a health emergency, use the emergency help panel.

Confirm before you go

Confirm the county served, appointment, assessment location and any cost. The state lists services; it does not promise local openings or approval.

The agency decides who can get help. Funds, appointments, and space may change. Keep private records with you; this page does not ask for them.
