Kentucky · What to do when…
Hospital bill you cannot pay
Ask for the hospital’s financial aid policy and apply through its billing office. Keep debt and court dates in view.
Match the bill to the care
Collect the bill, care date and any insurance statement. Note the amount and due date. Ask billing to explain charges you do not understand.
Ask for the aid policy
Contact the hospital billing office using the number on your bill. Ask for its financial assistance policy, plain-language summary and application. Ask for your preferred language.
Prepare the application
Read the hospital’s list of income and expense proof. Ask what it accepts if a record is missing. Keep copies of the form and everything you submit.
Ask what happens during review
Ask how long review takes and what happens to the bill while you wait. If a collector contacts you, say you are seeking hospital financial aid and ask about pausing collection.
Follow up on a set date
Ask billing to confirm receipt and give you a follow-up date. Request the decision in writing. If denied, ask for the reason and whether you can send more proof.
If this does not work
Use Kentucky Justice Online’s county map to ask legal aid about a billing or collection problem. If you have court papers, ask for help with those dates now.
Confirm before you go
Confirm the hospital’s aid desk, application deadline and proof list. An aid request does not promise a discount or stop a court deadline.
The agency decides who can get help. Funds, appointments, and space may change. Keep private records with you; this page does not ask for them.
