Toddler may need help learning or talking in Indiana

First Steps is Indiana’s early intervention program. Ask about a referral for your child.

  1. Step 1: Start a First Steps referral

Anyone can refer a child to First Steps. Tell the program what you have noticed about your child’s learning, talking or everyday activities.

  2. Step 2: Use the state contact route

Call 800-545-7763. Ask how to make a referral and which next step fits your child.

  3. Step 3: Ask about the review and support

Ask how First Steps reviews your child’s needs. Ask what family support and everyday activities it can discuss with you. A referral does not promise services.

  4. Step 4: Use the family rights information

Open Family Rights and Resolution Options from the state First Steps page. Ask the program about questions or concerns you have about the next step.

Keep these ready if you have them

  • Notes about what you have noticed
  • Questions you want to ask about your child’s development
